Of humble origins, she was raised in Barcelona and has lived in The Hague since the age of 19. Renowned for her painting, she works with large-format canvases using a characteristic contemporary variation on the fresco technique.

  • Incorporation of "Traces":

She utilizes paint rollers to create distinct marks or "traces" that complement the images, adding another layer of meaning and visual interest to her work.

Uniqueness:

  • Focus on the Human Condition:

A central and defining aspect of her work is the exploration of the human being and their relationship with society, particularly through portraits of individuals from various backgrounds, including street people, historical figures, and the marginalized.

  • Multidisciplinary Approach:

Beyond her large-scale paintings, Cabellut extends her artistic expression into video art, visual poetry, sculpture, installations, and scenography, showcasing her versatility and broad artistic vision.

  • Bridging Classical and Contemporary Art:

She masterfully blends traditional artistic heritage with contemporary media and techniques, creating a contemporary variation of classical painting that is instantly recognizable.

Antonio López (the Spaniard) is a leading contemporary realist painter known for his meticulous technique, pursuit of perfection, and unique ability to capture the "eternal nature of the moment" in everyday scenes and cityscapes like Madrid, often avoiding photos in favor of direct observation to capture light and form. His style is characterized by a slow, painstaking process, a focus on capturing light and atmosphere, and compositions that blend logical precision with a lingering sense of mystery and the infinite flow of time.

Key Aspects of His Style & Uniqueness

  • Direct Observation:

López paints from life, believing a camera captures a frozen, unalterable image, whereas he prefers to capture a specific instant from the dynamic flow of moments.

  • Mastery of Light and Tone:

He possesses an exceptional ability to use light and create sublime greys, which illuminates ordinary life and gives his work its distinct atmosphere.

  • Meticulous and Painstaking Process:

His approach to painting is incredibly detailed and time-consuming, often working on a single project for decades to achieve precise nuance and perfect texture.

  • Focus on the Everyday and Urban Landscapes:

While he paints still lifes, flowers, and portraits, he is a renowned witness to the changing face of Madrid, with many of his major works capturing the city's panoramic and street-level views.

  • Suspension of Time:

His art attempts to capture the eternal nature of a single moment, suspending it in time and inviting repeated viewing to appreciate the depth and complexity of the painter's journey.

  • Precise Measurements:

He employs very precise measurements to create structure and solidity in his work, a foundation for the search for order in his pieces.

  • Unclassifiable Essence:

His work defies easy categorization; it is not simply hyperrealism but a unique blend of precise observation, emotional depth, and the capture of subjective experience.

What Makes Him Unique

  • The Magic of Ordinary Life:

López's unique vision brings a sense of magic and vitality to mundane subjects, revealing the profound beauty in the everyday.

  • "The Hand Can Be Fast as Long as The Eye is Slow":

This simple yet profound philosophy guides his method, emphasizing the importance of slow, attentive observation to achieve accuracy.

  • Detachment from Instant Photography:

His deliberate avoidance of photographic reference is a key part of his unique process, ensuring each painting is an active engagement with the present moment rather than a reflection of a frozen past.
